Miamisburg - 05/18 *Sectional Championship

Aviators Win Sectional Crown
With 7-4 Triumph Over 'Burg

KETTERING - For the second straight season, the Aviators are Sectional Champions.  Monday evening's 7-4 victory over Miamisburg marks the 6th time in seven seasons that Butler has advanced to the District Finals.

On the mound for Butler was senior Tony Cono.  Coming off of a 14 strikeout performance against Piqua, Cono was solid once again for the Aviators.

The righty again went the distance, pitching seven innings while striking out seven.

Offensively the Aviators provided plenty of backup for their pitcher, peppering Vikings starter Colby Clark for 8 hits.

Sophomore Chase Goulette and junior Dillon Bell led Butler with 2 RBI each.  Senior Jordan Martin
, junior Trey Clements, and sophomore Chris Mayhill each added RBI's as well.

The Aviators advance to the District Championship where they will face Archbishop Moeller on Saturday, May 23rd.  The game will be played at Princeton High School, and gametime is set for 11:00 AM.

Centerville - 05/16

Still Searching For A Spark:
Aviators Lose To Centerville 5-3

CENTERVILLE
- The Aviators continued to struggle offensively Saturday, dropping a 5-3 decision to the host Centerville Elks.

Averaging nearly twelve runs a game during their recent eight game win streak, the Butler bats have cooled down to a frigid 3 RPG average over the last six contests.

The silver lining in Saturday's loss was freshman catcher Lance Straley's three run homerun in the top of the ninth, giving the Aviators their first runs of the day.

Butler worked out a number of pitchers, all of whom had pretty solid outings.  Freshman Taylore Cherry got the start, followed by sophomore Chris Mayhill.  Junior's Kyle Blakely, Nick Hansman, sophomore Ryan Keeler, and senior Kevin Ralston all logged innings for the Aviators.

Butler returns to tournament action Monday evening versus Miamisburg.  The Aviators won the first meeting between these teams 9-3, on May 4th.  Game time is set for 5:00 PM at Fairmont High School.  Admission is $6.

Piqua - 05/13 *Sect. Semi-Final

Aviators Stifle Piqua 6-1

VANDALIA - Pitching his last home game as an Aviator, senior righty Tony Cono made sure to leave a lasting impression.

The GWOC North Athlete of the Year lived up to the billing, striking out 14 in an impressive, complete seven inning performance, enroute to a 6-1 win over Piqua.  Cono highlighted the effort, striking out three in the 5th inning.

Offensively for the Aviators, sophomore Chris Mayhill led the purple and gold with two doubles and 2 RBI.  Fellow sophomore Chase Goulette also had a productive night, contributing a double, RBI triple, and the first Butler run of the night, stealing home in the 2nd inning.

Junior Trey Clements and senior Darren Himsworth both added an RBI each, and Cono picked up his second triple of the season.

With Wednesday's win, the Aviators advance to Monday's sectional final versus the winner of the Miamisburg/Lebanon game.

In the meantime Butler will work in a regular season game this Saturday at Centerville.  The Aviators and Elks will square off at noon.

Chaminade Julienne - 05/09

Aviators Outlast Eagles 2-1

VANDALIA
-
The Aviators snapped a two game skid Saturday, beating Chaminade Julienne 2-1 in ten innings.

Taylore Cherry turned in a beauty for the Aviators, striking out seven through as many innings.  The freshman pitcher also helped himself out defensively in the top of the 7th.  With one out and the bases loaded, Cherry combined with fellow freshman Lance Straley and senior Jordan Martin for a 1-2-3 double play, ending the inning and the Eagle threat.

Aside from Tony Cono's RBI in the bottom of the 3rd, the Aviators were unable to provide Cherry with any run support.  As a result, #34 came away with a no decision.

Cherry gave way to sophomore Chris Mayhill, who took the mound for the start of the 8th inning.  Mayhill struck out five, pitching three innings enroute to his second win of the season.

"We had good pitching, but the crazy thing was that we never retired them consecutively in one inning," coach Trent Dues said. "We just kept getting out of problems. We did a great job of damage control."

The game winning shot came in the bottom of the 10th with two on and two out.  Dillon Bell's gap busting line drive scored Trey Clements from third, sealing the Aviators victory.
"Dillon Bell did a nice job at bat," Dues said. "It was a nice win going into tournament time."

The win improves the Aviators record to 16-8, and more importantly ends the regular season on a winning note.  Butler will play host to either Springfield or Piqua Wednesday, May 13th as the post season begins.  Game time is set for 5:00 PM.

Centerville - 05/07

Elks Edge Butler 6-4

VANDALIA
-
The Aviators kept it close, but just could not get over the hump Thursday, losing to Centerville 6-4.

"I think we played terrible baseball," coach Trent Dues said. "You can't play baseball like that. You can't just give teams runs and run yourself right out of innings with bad base running and take third strikes looking. You've got to battle."

The Aviators got a solid effort on the mound from pitcher Tony Cono who went the distance, striking out seven.  It just came down to capitalizing on opportunities, and for the second game in a row the Aviators found themselves snake bit.
"Tony Cono pitched a great game," Dues said.

Offensively Butler was led by Jordan Martin who's first inning, two run homer narrowed the Centerville lead to just 3-2.

Chase Goulette added an RBI and a double, while Dillon Bell and Cono added their own doubles.  Shortstop Darren Himsworth was also credited with an RBI.

Thursday's loss drops the Aviators to 15-8 overall
.  Things do not get any easier for Butler, as they travel to Cincinnati Friday evening to take on the 14th ranked Elder Panthers.  Game time is set for 5:00.

Lebanon - 05/05

Aviators Fall To Warriors 4-1
LEBANON - The opportunities were there, but the Aviators just could not take advantage of them in Tuesday's 4-1 loss to Lebanon.

Facing the Warriors top pitcher Dusty Isaacs, the Aviators got a first hand look at 90 mph heat the Lebanon hurler brings.

Undeterred by the sizzling fastballs, the Butler batters managed to hit Issacs, but the bleeders and bloopers all fell the the way of the Warriors.

The Aviators were led offensively by Tony Cono, who's RBI single in the top of the third narrowed the Lebanon lead to just 2-1.

Tuesday's sneak peek could be of great value, as a possible rematch with Lebanon could materialize in the state tournament.

The Aviators travel to Huber Heights Wednesday evening to take on border rival Wayne.  The Butler-Wayne game always proves to be an intense one, and this season should be no different.  Game time is set for 5:00, and you can listen to the game live on 97.7 FM and 101.0 FM.

Miamisburg - 05/04

Aviator Express Rolls On, As
Butler Beats 'Burg 9-3

VANDALIA
-
The red hot Aviators picked up their 8th straight win Monday evening, steaming past Miamisburg 9-3.

The win improves the Aviators overall record to 15-6, and gives Butler sole possession of the GWOC North division title at 11-1.

Freshman right-hander Taylor Cherry remained unbeaten, notching his fourth win of the season.  Cherry pitched his second straight complete game, striking out three.

Offensively the Aviators continued to sizzle, crushing 14 hits and moving baserunners like a Detroit assembly line.  The Aviators were led by senior Tony Cono and sophomore Chase Goulette with 2 RBI and a double each.

Seniors
Jordan Martin, Darren Himsworth and freshman Lance Straley each had an RBI.  Junior Dillon Bell had an RBI and a double.

The Aviators close out division play Tuesday afternoon versus the Lebanon Warriors.  Game time is set for 5:00.

Troy - 05/02

Aviators Clinch GWOC North With
13-5 Win Over Troy

DAYTON - After settling for second place the past two seasons, Butler is back on top of the GWOC North.  The Aviators bullied their way past Troy 13-5, to clinch their 12th division championship in 15 seasons.

Playing on the big stage that is Fifth-Third Field, the Aviators looked right at home.  Freshman catcher Lance Straley got things going in the first inning, pounding a Luke Langdon pitch into the outfield for 2 RBI.  Straley would finish with 3 RBI on the day.

First baseman Jordan Martin picked up an RBI in the second inning, and distracted the Trojans with an attempt to steal second, that allowed junior Trey Clements to steal home for a 4-2 Aviator lead.

The Trojans would come back and tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom half of the second.  With one out and two on it looked as if Troy would take it's first lead of the game.  However Darren Himsworth, Dillon Bell, and Martin combined for a masterful doubleplay to end the inning.  "It was just a phenomenal double play by Dillon Bell and Darren Himsworth," coach Trent Dues said after the game.  "That was the turning point of the game.  It was a fantastic play and it definitely stopped a big rally by Troy."

From there senior pitcher Tony Cono would take over, and backed by the solid Butler defense would only see one additional Trojan runner cross the plate.

Cono picked up his second win of the season, pitching 4 2/3 innings and striking out five.  Cono entered in the second inning, relieving junior Kyle Blakely and starting pitcher Kevin Ralston.

Joining in on the scoring for Butler was Himsworth with a double and 2 RBI.  The Aviators also got RBI's from Kyle Coby, Chris Mayhill, Chase Goulette, and Bell.

With Saturday's big win, the Aviators improve to 14-6 overall and an impressive 10-1 in the GWOC North.  Butler can guarantee themselves sole ownership of the GWOC crown with a win over Miamisburg and/or Lebanon next week.
The Aviators have won seven straight games.

Fairborn - 04/29

Aviators' Streak Continues With 8-2 Win Over Skyhawks

VANDALIA - The GWOC's hottest team showed no signs of cooling down Wednesday evening, picking up their sixth straight win, with an 8-2 victory over Fairborn.

The Aviators got a solid performance from pitcher Taylore Cherry (3-0).  The 6'9 freshman easily had his finest performance of the season, striking out seven and pitching a complete game.  After the game head coach Trent Dues echoed those sentiments.  "That was a heck of a pitching job," said Dues.  "We just saw what he's capable of.  He's capable of dominating the game."

The visiting Skyhawks were able to keep things close through four innings.  Sophomore Chris Mayhill's two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning was the demoralizing shot that would ultimately blow the game wide open.

Offensively for the Aviators Jordan Martin, Mike Radominski, and Mayhill teamed up for 2 RBI each.  Trey Clements and Tony Cono combined for two runs when each stole home plate.

With the win, the Aviators improve to 13-6 overall and 9-1 in the GWOC North.  Butler has three league games left, and can guarantee at least a share of the GWOC North  crown with a win over Troy Friday night.

The Aviators and Trojans will square off Friday night at Fifth-Third Field in Downton Dayton.  Game time is slated for 7:15.

Sidney - 04/27

Aviators Take The Sting Out of
Sidney In 5-3 Win

SIDNEY - What's better than beating a team's ace?  Beating that ace twice.  That is just what the Aviators did Monday evening, knocking off division foe Sidney 5-3.

After handing pitcher Cory Echols his first loss of the season last week, the Butler baseball team spoiled yet another afternoon for the Yellow Jackets top pitcher.

On the mound for the Aviators was senior Kevin Ralston (6-1), who picked up his sixth win of the season.  Ralston pitched four innings, striking out five batters.  Fellow senior Tony Cono came on in the fifth inning, striking out five enroute to his sixth save of the season.

Quite possibly the key play of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning.  With Sidney threatening a two out rally, sophomore leftfielder Chase Goulette  made an acrobatic, inning ending catch, saving two runs from scoring.

Offensively for the Aviators, Cono had 2 RBI and senior second baseman Darren Himsworth added an RBI with a squeeze play in the fourth inning.  Junior shortstop Dillon Bell scored twice for Butler.

Monday's win improves the Aviators record to 12-6 overall and 8-1 in the GWOC North.  With a two game lead over Sidney in the league standings, the Aviators control their own destiny.

Butler returns home Wednesday to play host to the Fairborn Skyhawks.  Game time is set for 5:00 PM.

Trotwood - 04/24

Butler Blasts Trotwood 22-1

TROTWOOD - The Aviators finished a perfect week of baseball Friday evening at Trotwood, blowing past the Rams 22-1.

The win was Butler's fourth straight, and more importantly improved the Aviators conference record to 7-1.

Junior pitcher Kyle Blakely cruised to his first win of the season, overwhelming the Rams all day.

Offensively Butler set the tone in the first inning, battering Trotwood for 14 runs.  The deficit was far too much for the overmatched Rams to recover.

The Aviators will take a break this Saturday for prom festivities, but will resume play Monday evening at Sidney.  Butler leads the Yellowjackets by a game in the GWOC North.

Butler JV Pounds Lebanon

While the varsity was in Trotwood taking it to the Rams, the Aviators JV squad was at home hammering visiting Lebanon.  The Aviators beat the Warriors 16-1.  Check out photos of Friday's action below.

Troy - 04/23

Aviators Take Out Troy 6-4

VANDALIA - The Aviators tightened their grip on first place in the GWOC North Thursday night, knocking off the visiting Troy Trojans 6-4.

Senior pitcher Tony Cono picked up his first win of the season, and it was a big one.  The crafty right-hander turned in a solid effort, striking out six and going the distance on the hill.

Trailing the whole game, the Trojans finally rallied in the fifth inning, plating three runs to take a 4-3 lead.  But the Troy jubilation would be short lived.  Butler catcher Lance Straley's moonshot to left field in the bottom half evened the affair at 4-4.

Outfielder Chase Goulette's line drive double in the sixth inning would be the back breaker for Troy, as the Aviators would empty the bases, scoring two runs, to take a 6-4 lead.

Cono finished strong for the Aviators, striking out two of the final three batters in the seventh inning.

Junior Trey Clements contributed 2 RBI in the second inning while Mike Radominski got the scoring started with an RBI in the first.

Thursday's win improves Butler's overall record to 10-6 and 6-1 in the GWOC North.  The Aviators hit the road Friday to take on Trotwood.  Game time is set for 5:00.

Butler Demolishes Piqua 14-5

VANDALIA - The Aviators bruised and battered yet another GWOC pitcher Wednesday night, clobbering the Piqua Indians 14-5.

Picking up where they left off the night before, Butler's bats terrorized the Indians for six innings, scattering twelve hits.

Senior outfielder Mike Radominski led the Aviators with 3 RBI.  Dillon Bell, Chase Goulette and Lance Straley added two RBI each, while junior Trey Clements had a triple and an RBI.

Junior pitcher Nick Hansman picked up his first victory of the season, throwing 4 quality innings.  Hansman was relieved in the 5th inning by sophomore Chris Mayhill who would close this one out.

Sidney - 04/21

Aviators Punish Sidney 12-2

VANDALIA - The Aviators ended their losing skid with authority Tuesday night, run-ruling Sidney 12-2, taking over the top spot in the GWOC North.

After a rough weekend of baseball, the Aviators exorcised their demons with a dominating display of offense and solid pitching.

Senior hurler Kevin Ralston (5-1) picked up his fifth win of the season, and remained unbeaten as a starter.  Ralston pitched 4 2/3 innings, striking out six before giving way to junior Nick Hansman.

Facing Sidney ace Corey Echols (5-1), the Aviators were undaunted jumping out to an early 4-1 lead.  Outfielders Mike Radominski and Chase Goulette led Butler with 2 RBI each.  Goulette was 3-for-4, while Radominski had two doubles.  Senior first baseman Jordan Martin added a little razzle dazzle in the bottom of the 4th ripping a two-run homer.

The Aviators improve to 8-6 overall, and gain sole possession of first place in the GWOC North at 4-1.  Butler continues conference play Wednesday when they host Piqua at 5:00.

Tipp/Northmont (DH) - 04/18

Aviators Come Up Empty

ENGLEWOOD - After coming up just short Friday evening in Springboro, the Aviators were hoping to bounce back with two wins on Saturday.  Unfortunately for the purple and gold it was more heartache.  Not once...but twice, ending the weekend on a losing skid.

Butler traveled across the dam to face neighboring Tippecanoe and Northmont in a Saturday doubleheader.  In game one the Aviators battled back and forth with the Red Devils, trading leads, hits, and crafty pitches.  In the end Tipp would prevail 6-4.

Looking to salvage the day, Butler jumped up on host Northmont early in game two, plating four runs in the first inning.  Senior outfielder Kyle Coby highlighted the inning with a three run double.

Freshman catcher Lance Straley and senior outfielder Mike Radominski would both homer in this one, but the Northmont bats had too much thunder in the end.  Tied 9-9, the Bolts walk off three run homer in the bottom of the 7th was the decisive one, as Northmont prevailed 12-9.

The Aviators drop to 7-6 overall, and will resume conference play Monday at home versus Troy (7-5,4-2).  The Trojans currently sit in third place in the GWOC North behind Butler and first place Sidney.  Game time is set for 5:00 PM.

Springboro - 04/17

Panthers Get Past Butler 7-6

SPRINGBORO - They could have charged an admission fee to Friday's game, and it would have been worth every penny.  The Aviators and host Springboro battled back and forth for seven innings, with  the Panthers escaping with a 7-6 win.

Senior pitcher Tony Cono went the distance for Butler, in what was a nailbiter of a game for the large energized crowd on hand.

After a slow start, the Butler offense came alive to take a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning.  Freshman catcher Lance Straley's crushing double to start the inning, led to Darren Himsworth's sacrifice fly, scoring pinch runner Kevin Ralston for the lead.

The Panthers answered in the bottom half, plating four runs to take a 7-4 lead.  The Aviators battled back to within one, and it looked like they had tied the game with a hard hit line drive by Trey Clements.  A great snag by Springboro first baseman Mike Kindel would end the rally and the game.

The Aviators will be aiming to get back in the win column Saturday when they travel to Englewood for a double header versus Tippecanoe and former GWOC North nemesis Northmont.  Game One is set for 12:30 with the second game getting under way at 3:00.

Xenia - 04/16

Aviators Cruise Past Xenia 11-1

VANDALIA -  Butler's Kevin Ralston (4-0) has been a force on the mound all season, and the dominance continued Thursday in an 11-1 win over Xenia.

The senior righty picked up his fourth win of the year, striking out three, walking one, and allowing only one hit through four innings of work.

The Aviators offense attacked early and often led by senior Tony Cono's homerun, double, and 4 RBI performance.  Senior Jordan Martin contributed 2 RBI, and junior shortstop Dillon Bell was two for two with 2 RBI.

Thursday's win was Butler's third in a row, lifting them to 7-3 overall and a perfect 3-0 in conference play.  Butler travels to Springboro Friday for a showdown with the Panthers, who currently sit atop the GWOC South.  Game time is set for 5:00 PM.

Monday's win improves Butler's record to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Hilliard-Davidson - 04/11

Aviators Dispatch Davidson 6-1

VANDALIA After starting the day with a lackluster 4-0 loss to Hamilton, the Aviators redeemed themselves with a 6-1 win over Hilliard-Davidson (5-1).

Senior pitcher Kevin Ralston dominated on the mound for four innings, before giving way to reliever Tony Cono.  Cono closed out the final three innings with an equally impressive outing.

The Aviators offense provided plenty of spark, scattering nine hits over six innings.  Alan Bane got the party started in the first inning with a double and 2 RBI.  Dillon Bell's RBI single in the fourth inning gave Butler a 3-0 lead.  Tony Cono, Mike Radominski, and Darren Himsworth also combined for a total of 3 RBI.

With Saturday evening's win, the Aviators improved to 5-3 on the year, and handed Davidson it's first loss of the season.

Butler resumes play Monday, April 13th at home versus Trotwood.  Game time is set for 5:00 PM.

Hamilton Blanks Butler 4-0

VANDALIA The Aviators dropped game one of Saturday's double header 4-0 to Hamilton.

Despite a solid pitching effort by sophomore Chris Mayhill and reliever Nick Hansman, the Aviators just could not generate any offense.

The loss to Hamilton drops Butler to 4-3 on the season, while the Big Blue improve to 3-2.

The Aviators will be looking to bounce back this evening when they take on Hilliard-Davidson at 5:00.  The Wildcats (4-0) beat Butler 10-7 earlier this season in Hilliard.

Butler Handles Piqua 10-5

PIQUA -  It looked like a route early on, but the host Piqua Indians stuck around for seven innings Thursday evening, eventually falling to Butler 10-5.

The Aviators lead 9-3 heading into the fifth inning, when Piqua scored two runs narrowing the Butler lead to just four.  That would be as close as the Indians would get, as the Piqua bats fell silent in the sixth and seventh innings.

Senior pitcher Kevin Ralston (2-0) picked up his second win of the season.  Junior relievers Kyle Blakely and Nick Hansman sealed the Butler victory.

Offensively for Butler, freshman catcher Lance Straley was two for four with a homerun and an RBI.  Sophomore Chase Goulette was two for four with a double and 3 RBI, Dillon Bell was also two for four with a double.  Alan Bane and Tony Cono each added an RBI.

Thursday's win over Piqua puts Butler at 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in division play.  The Aviators are off Friday and will be back in action this Saturday at home, when they host the Big Blue of Hamilton and Hilliard-Davidson.

The first game of the day will be at noon versus Hamilton, followed by a rematch against Davidson at 5:00.

Late Surge Lifts Aviators Over Fairmont 8-6

KETTERING -  The Aviators overcame frigid conditions and a scrappy Fairmont team Wednesday evening, bringing home an 8-6 victory.

The two teams battled back and forth for most of the game, until the Aviators erupted in the sixth inning, taking the lead for good.

Sophomore pitcher Chris Mayhill picked up his first win of the season, coming in to relieve starter Taylore Cherry.

Offensively for the Aviators, Jordan Martin and Alan Bane both had 2 RBI.  Tony Cono, Lance Straley, Darren Himsworth, and Chase Goulette each added RBI's of their own.

Wednesday's win was a landmark one for head coach Trent Dues who picked up his 300th career win at Butler.  At 300 wins, Dues is the winningest coach in school history.

The Aviators (3-2) open up league play Thursday versus GWOC North foe Piqua.  Game time is set for 5:00 PM at Hardman Field in Piqua.

Butler Splits Series In Coldwater

COLDWATER The Coldwater Cavs may be considered a small school by OHSAA standards, but they play some big time baseball in this part of Mercer County.

The Aviators spilt Saturday's doubleheader at picturesque Veteran's Field, winning the first game 7-5 and dropping the second 4-3.

Freshman pitcher Taylore Cherry notched his first varsity win in the first game of the day.  While senior Tony Cono picked up the save, his second of the season.  Freshman catcher Lance Straley had a double and 2 RBI.

Senior hurler Kevin Ralston (1-0) had a solid outing in game two, but the host Cavs chipped away at Buter's early 3-0 lead, ousting Butler in the bottom of the 7th.

The Aviators evened their record at 2-2, and return home Monday when they play host to the Xenia Buccaneers.  This will be the first league game of the season, as all GWOC South contests will now count in addition to those played against GWOC North foes. [PHOTOS]

at Hilliard-Davidson - 04/01

Aviators' Rally Falls Short

HILLIARD Despite an urgent rally, the Butler baseball team came up short Wednesday evening, falling to Hilliard Davidson 10-7.  The loss evens the Aviators record at 1-1 on the season.

The Aviators took an early 3-1 lead in the 2nd inning, by way of a Mike Radominski two run homer.  Davidson however would use a five run 5th inning to blow the game wide open, taking a 9-3 lead.

Butler rallied for 4 runs in the final two innings, but fell short of the comeback.

Offensively for the Aviators, Darren Himsworth was two for three with 2 RBI.  Jordan Martin was a perfect three for three at the plate with an RBI, sophomore Chase Goulette was two for four, and the aforementioned Radominski was two for four.

Butler looks to bounce back Friday, when they travel to Lebanon (1-1), for a 5:00 meeting with the Warriors.  Lebanon is coming off of an 18-16 win over Edgewood.
